Library
The school library is open and staffed continuously from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. We aim to support our students and staff members in their learning, teaching, research and study as well as their recreational reading. Literacy and independent study are encouraged while all the support necessary is given as and when needed. All students are welcome to use the library before and after school during homework club as well as during morning and lunch break for study and research, to complete their homework , to read or borrow books.
Our Professionally Qualified Staff have many years experience and are happy to help with any questions or queries the students may have, do not be afraid to ask.
We are also fortunate to have a number of enthusiastic and dedicated Student Librarians who assist in the running of the Library.
Resources we offer
- We have over 14,000 books in the Library (including textbooks) and regularly review our stock to ensure it is up to date and relevant. Many of our books are recommendations or requests by students and staff.
- We have a computer area with 29 computers available throughout the day to Sixth Form and to years 7-11 at breaktimes and lunchtimes. Students may print (subject to credit) but photocopying is not available.
- We host a small careers section containing resources provided by the careers department.
- Thanks to a donation from the PTA, we have been able to set up a dedicated Silent Reading area with comfortable seating and bean bags
Library Behaviour & Rules
Students are encouraged to behave in a way that makes the use of the library a pleasant experience for all:
- The Library is a Quiet Study Area. Noisy students will be asked to leave.
- Students (including Sixth Form) should remove coats before entering and ensure lanyards and ID are clearly displayed.
- Students are expected to study, complete homework or read and behave in accordance with the school rules and values.
- Food and drink are not allowed in the Library, chewing gum is particularly prohibited.
- As the Schools Senior Students, we expect the behaviour of the Sixth Form to be exemplary and an inspiration to our junior students.
- Students are expected to respect the Library Staff and follow any instructions given to them.
Borrowing Limits & Times
- We work on the "two for two" rule. Students may borrow two books for two weeks, though some popular books are restricted to ensure availability.
- Subject specific textbooks (GCSE, A-Level) do not count against borrowing limits as they are "essential". These are loaned on request from the main desk and are for a full academic year.
- We do not charge fines on overdue books, however books returned more than 14 days overdue will earn a negative.
- We expect students to take care of the books leant to them, and will expect lost or damaged books to be replaced or paid for.
Computers in the Library
The Library has a suite of 29 Computers and 16 Laptops. These are available (subject to lesson bookings) during the day for Sixth Form use, and during Break, Lunchtime and Homework Club for other years. We also support lessons if required: UCAS, Reading Testing etc. Printing is available, subject to students having printing credits.
Students should be aware that computer use is monitored and that they are used for appropriate academic purposes.
6th Form in the Library
During the school day the Sixth form may use the Library for work and study, provided the facilities have not been booked for lessons or other activities. As noted in the rules, we expect their behaviour to be of the highest standard and an example to the junior students of the school.
