The Curriculum Journey at MHCHS

Key Stage 3 (Year 7, 8 and 9)

Students in Key Stage 3 are taught in mixed ability classes, except in Mathematics and Physical Education. Mathematics and Physical Education typically will begin arranging classes according to ability during Year 7.

Year 7 students are allocated two languages when they first join and they will study these during Key Stage 3. Students will pick their language preferences prior to joining the School and will be given at least their first choice. We offer French, German, and Spanish.

Below outlines the allocation of teaching hours per fortnight that students will receive during their time in Key Stage 3:

**A small number of students will be allocated only one language (i.e. French) and be provided with additional English support.

 

Key Stage 4 (Year 10 and 11)

Students in Year 10 typically take nine or ten GCSEs. Students are required to take GCSEs in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Science (Combined or Separate), Religious Studies and a Language and/or a Humanity. In addition, students choose two further GCSEs from a list 15 subjects.  Students will also take non-GCSE lessons in Physical Education and PSHE.

Key Stage 5 (Sixth Form: Year 12 and Year 13)

Students within the Sixth Form choose either 3 or 4 A Levels. Students are required to the meet the minimum entry criteria for entry into the Sixth Form (five grade 5s at GCSE, including grade 5 in English and grade 4 in Mathematics) as well as meeting the individual subject grade criteria for their chosen A Levels.
